Frequently Asked Questions

GENERAL INFORMATION

Q: What is Functional Medicine?

A: Functional medicine is a science-based, systems-biology approach that looks for the root causes of symptoms instead of only suppressing them. It considers how genetics, environment, nutrition, stress, sleep, and lifestyle interact to create either health or disease, and builds a personalized plan to restore balance.

Q: How is functional medicine different from conventional medicine?

A: Conventional care typically focuses on diagnosing a disease and prescribing medication or procedures to manage symptoms. Functional medicine looks at the whole person over time, mapping your story, using targeted testing, and addressing root imbalances through nutrition, lifestyle, environment, and when appropriate, medications and other therapies.

Q: Is functional medicine evidence-based or “alternative”

A: Functional medicine uses current medical research, advanced lab testing, and established physiology, but applies them through a root-cause, whole-person lens. It may incorporate conventional medications along with nutrition, lifestyle, and integrative therapies based on what is safest and most effective for you.

Q: Who is functional medicine for?

A: It is especially helpful for people with chronic symptoms, hormone issues, gut problems, fatigue, autoimmune conditions, or fertility concerns that haven’t responded to a “band-aid” approach. It is also ideal if you feel “not sick but not well” and want a proactive, preventive plan.

Q: Can functional medicine be used for prevention, not just disease?

A: Yes. Functional medicine is proactive, focusing on optimizing health and catching imbalances early, before they progress to disease. Many people choose this approach simply to feel their best and protect long-term health.

Q: What is the 'Let's Get Baby Ready' program?

A: The 'Let's Get Baby Ready' program is a 5-week course designed to empower you to optimize your health and increase your chances of conceiving. It includes 5 weeks of experiential learning, bi-weekly office hours, and access to resources that address both physical and emotional aspects of fertility.

APPOINTMENTS AND CONSULTATIONS

Q: What happens in the first visit?

A: Your initial visit includes a deep dive into your health history, current symptoms, lifestyle, environment, and goals, plus a focused exam if appropriate. From there, we recommend any necessary testing and outline a first-phase plan so you leave with clear next steps.

Q: What kinds of tests do you use?

A: Depending on your case, we may use conventional labs plus advanced testing, such as hormone panels, nutrient status, gut microbiome and digestion testing, inflammation markers, or toxin exposure assessments, always choosing only what is likely to change your treatment plan.

Q: How long does it take to see results?

A: Some people notice changes within weeks when key triggers are addressed, while others with more complex or long-standing issues need several months of steady work. We reassess regularly and adjust your plan based on your progress and lab findings.

Q: How often will we meet?

A: Most patients start with more frequent visits in the first 3–4 months while we’re investigating root causes and implementing changes, then space visits out as their plan stabilizes and symptoms improve. The exact schedule is tailored to your needs and goals.

Q: How can I book a consultation?

A: You can book a consultation by clicking here: Book Initial Consultation. You can also reach out via email ([email protected]) or phone (703-991-0135) for further assistance.
